We’re stumped! I still vote for Carole. Definitely not Garbo or Dietrich. And Tallu always looked more world-weary, even when she was young. Could be someone completely different, of course.
OK, so I did some photo sleuthing. I posted some more pix of Carole and Greta today (4/16). I’m perfectly willing to defer to your superior knowledge but… it was hard to find a picture of Carole with anything but blonde or dirty blonde hair and the second picture of Greta I posted today looks a lot like the mystery picture. So… I still don’t know.
I don’t have superior knowledge! I’m better at some things than others, just like everybody else. You do an incredible job with the stars, and then find other amazing things I know nothing about, like cars and French post cards and naked cowboys.
Been looking at pix of these stars this morning to try to figure this out. Tallulah and Dietrich are definitely out. I see the eyebrow shape of Carole and possibly the same ring in several other of her pix, but otherwise it looks very much like Garbo to me. After work I’ll look some more to see if we can nail this.
I think you may be right – since they didn’t have coloured contact lenses back then I don’t think and Carole did have a little bit more of a “severe” shaped faced. But… not to be stubborn (moi?)… the face… it looks much like the picture of Greta I posted on April 16th. So I changed the title to either/or. And I guess we can just move on! I’ve got a slew of not so famous stars from the 30s & 40s to post and maybe you can tell me a little about some of them because I’ve never even heard of some of them.

Garbo’s irises are darker, while Carole’s are very light. I’m still voting for Carole.
