The Douglas DC-4 was a very widely used short-haul, smaller plane used in the 1940s-1960s, and then afterwards in less developed nations. It had a short landing/take off requirement so could also be flown into small airports and landing strips in remote areas. Think of it like the Boeing 737 today, except a lot more of a tough workhorse.
