The idea being that you sweat of the pounds while looking like a buffoon instead of actually doing any exercise.

What a great film! Must have yanked Joan Crawford’s chain no end that Norma Shearer got the top billing in the promotion for the film – I’ve mentioned Joan’s absolute loathing of Norma before. One of my favourite lines from these old movies comes from “The Women”, I use it whenever I can: Mary Boland sitting at a bar with Norma Shearer and Paulette Goddard (if I recall correctly, it’s been a  while since I last saw it) as they commiserate about men and marriage “L’amour! L’amour!”
