Very slow moving but a one-of-a-kind, weird and wonderful movie. A lot of gay guys in loin cloths and surreal sets. The kind of movie that few would ever imagine could have been made in 1923.
1923 was pre-code, yes? Things were a little racier in the very early days of film than in the 30’s & 40’s. I saw “Salome” so long ago I barely remember it.
Yep, the code started in mid-1934. Pre-code usually refers to talkies from 1929 to 1934, some of which were really quite wild (see “Baby Face” or “Madam Satan”) but as we have mentioned here before, there are a ton of surprising images in the silents. The nudity in “Ben Hur,” witches kissing the devil’s butt in “Haxan…”
