Like many people, hearing about the hell that the Syrian people are enduring makes me feel angry, sad, numb, and powerless. Like so many war-torn places there are no simple solutions to finding some sort of peace. But having a very strong memory of the whole carnage that collectively were known as the Balkan Wars in the 1990s (Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, etc.) and how complex and unsolvable it all once seemed and thinking about how, now, there is some semblance of peace, democracy, and prosperity there – it makes me think that there might be a way, eventually, to bring peace to Syria. A little international intervention, a lot of negotiation/compromise, disarming, justice, and a lot of re-drawing of the maps. Try it. It may not be perfect but it’d be better than the daily carnage and millions of refugees.
