I saw “Mary Poppins” when it first came out, and loved it. Ma bought me the soundtrack album, but it wasn’t Julie Andrews. It was “The Christy Minstrals Sing Mary Poppins” or something. $0.59 at the grocery store. Totally bogus. Did they think I was an easily fooled heterosexual little boy, or what? I had a fit and made my parents buy me the original, real soundtrack, which was a small fortune for us. I can let a lot of things slide, but you don’t mess with Julie Andrews.
That’s funny, Dan, knowing the difference at such a tender, young age. And being a wise cultural queen from the get-go.
I’m a few years younger than you so by the time I was a little gay boy Mary Poppins was not new. But I did have the original (Julie Andrews) record and played it often. I graduated from that to the original, Rex Harrison version of “My Fair Lady”.
