I just watched this movie last night. Not his, um, best movie but the film was shot in Berlin immediately after WWII. Wow. Was that city mostly flattened into big piles of rubble. And then right after the war was the Soviet Blockade of the city and the Berlin Airlift – which is what this movie was about. The western allies, chiefly the US, flew around-the-clock flights into Berlin with food and coal (for heating) until the Soviets negotiated a settlement for a land corridor to Berlin from West Germany. (And then immediately after that built the Berlin Wall to keep people from leaving the Soviet sector of the city).
A couple of Cold War dates to remember:
Berlin Blockade June ’48 thru May ’49 (land/water access to Allied-occupied areas of Berlin blockaded by Soviet government); Berlin Airlift June ’48 thru September ’49 (US & UK planes flying in food, fuel & medicine 24/7); Berlin Wall erected 13/08/1961 & fell Novermber 1989; over the years it had become a closely watched death zone.
