Even before I ran across your island I was fascinated by his work and then when I found he was Gay, it all made sense! lol
I thought I found a photo of him and his lover, but the clothes they are wearing in the photo do not fit the time when they were living. Perhaps, I am wrong, either way the search continues…………….
I think I did once see a picture of the two of them. In any case his long-term boyfriend also was a model for many of his drawings so we do know what he looked like at least.I only “discovered” Leyendecker’s work in like the last 5 years. I like his work so much more than that of his his successor at magazine cover and other illustration – Norman Rockwell.
This is the work of JC’s lesser known brother Frank Xavier. He died (probably suicide) living in Norman Rockwell’s garage after fighting with JC in the early 20s. I think his work has less polish but sometimes that is a good thing…
Thanks, Guy. I wasn’t sure which brother this was drawn by so I didn’t give a first name. It didn’t look like JC’s style but I knew it was a Leyendecker illustration. And I forgot the brother’s name. Maybe Rockwell bumped off FX to get rid of some of the competition, then made it look like a possible suicide?
