Nicholas II was not the worst of them but he was no great reformer. Many people died from his lack of reforms and from the pogroms and ethnic cleansing that went on during his reign. I certainly don’t glorify the blood-soaked imperial past – I just think he was cute.
lol, Yes he was and I agree with you about what he and his fore bearers did to the people. I think his wife wore the pants in the family.
It would be interesting to see if he had abdicated earlier , and some other relative took over (other than his brother) if the monarchy might have survived.
.
The monarchy was never going to survive in any shape or form under Communist/Bolshevik rule. But NIcholas II and family could have abdicated or at least gone into exile to save their lives – and didn’t. I mentioned recently about the failed plan to bring the Russian royal family to England for exile. But still, I think there must have been somewhere else they could have gone (US or Canada?) to save their asses (and a few assets – take the Faberge eggs with you, Nicky!)- but they stubbornly stayed put. As horrible as some of the tsars were (Nicholas II not being the worst) I still don’t think it’s right in any way to kill your opponents as the Bolsheviks did. Which was worse – having royalty run things or communist rule? Which was the lesser of two evils? I lean towards saying communism was worse but I also am biased since the commies stole my grandmother’s family’s fortune.
I agree with your comment 100% and for me it was just the way the Communists/Bolsheviks dealt not only with Nicholas II and his family, but all the extended members of the family. I read somewhere that they took a group of the extended family out to an iron mine shaft , pushed them into it and threw grenades into the pit and that didn’t kill them and then they threw another grenade down and that didn’t do it so they pushed some brush into the pit and lit it on fire. I understand Revolutions can be bloody and messy, but their brutality to me was so extreme as to do that to another human being is just down right cruel and heartless. It bothered me the first time when I read it at 15 and it still bothers me now. Yes the Romanov’s weren’t the best rulers but no human being deserves to die in the way they massacred Nicholas’ Family and the other members as well. Ok so that’s my 2 cents. I am sorry I have not responded to this in a more timely manner. I love chatting with you as most of my friends find the topics I like boring! So Thank you my friend!
I’ve heard so many different stories concerning him………..some portray him as a Tryant ……….others portray was Wishy Washy…………
