This famous event occurred, after a brutal battle, when the US took the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese. It happened 70 years + 2 weeks ago. It was significant in that the US (and allies such as Australia & China) had finally re-taken all the territory Japan had invaded and taken, leaving basically only Japan itself to fall to the Allies. At this point Japan was surrounded by the Allies and also cut off from natural resources (most importantly: oil). Japan didn’t surrender for another 6 months though.
