WWII: Dead Nazi soldiers as far as the eye can see, Stalingrad, Russia
I believe the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942-43 was the most epic battle in the European theatre during WWII, with something like 2,000,000 people being killed in and around Stalingrad. The battle consisted of Germans, Hungarians, and Romanians fighting against the Soviets. The Soviets ultimately prevailed. The city of Volgograd was built on the ruins of Stalingrad.
