Today is the 70th anniversary of the US dropping an atom bomb on Hiroshima. I’m not sure if this picture is from Hiroshima or from the atomic bombing of Nagasaki a few days later. I remember in high school or college (in the 1980s) I had to write a paper about whether or not I agreed with the decision to drop the bombs on Japan. I ultimately concluded that as horrific as these attacks were it was a major factor in Japan soon after surrendering and they saved many 100,000’s of Japanese, American, Australian, and other lives that would have been lost in the continuation of the war at a stalemate (such as it was in August 1945) or a full scale invasion of the Japanese mainland islands. I’m glad it wasn’t my decision to make. On the other hand, I can see no credible justification for the internment of Japanese-Americans in the US during WWII and the forfeiture of property.
