When I started working in this garden all that was there were the rock wall and granite steps, I then totally reworked all the soil and did all the planting. I showed these 2 pictures in a presentation to a garden club in a neighboring, swanky town a couple of months ago and there was an audible gasp in the surprisingly large crowd when I showed the second picture. Landscaping, at least the way I do it, is one of the dramatic arts.
