Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer in “The Women”, 1939
Joan Crawford absolutely despised Norma Shearer in real life, much more so than the trumped up and catty rivalry between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Doesn’t make for such good TV or tabloid fodder though because it was more seething hate than juicy, flippant banter. “The Women” is a classic film with an all-star cast (Joan is cast as the villain, go figure), it came out the same year as “Wizard of Oz” and “Gone With the Wind”. What a box office year that must’ve been!
