Nothing can beat seeing an artwork ‘in the flesh’. This was part of the Colours of Impressionism exhibition that toured exclusively here to Adelaide, South Australia, and Singapore in 2018. It was a delight.
You’re right about it being an early work – 1868-69. Just read about it in the exhibition book. It’s in the grouping titled “La Peinture Claire: towards the new painting”, and is grouped with other snow paintings. Unsurprisingly the commentary says ‘but its charm was wasted on the members of the Salon jury’ and they almost certainly refused to exhibit it. The catalogue titles it simply ‘La pie (The magpie)’. Hope this may help from a raw amateur.

I’ve never seen it before. It doesn’t look very impressionistic, so I wonder if it’s an early work?
