So… my little corner of the world got hit by two separate mega storms over the last 5 days. Worst two storms in either 30 or 60 years (depending on who you listen to) – both in the same week. Both at or above hurricane strength. But what did all the damage was huge waves and a major storm surge. My house, located up on steep hill overlooking the ocean, is fine as are my family’s two houses down near the ocean but not directly on it. Houses down right on the water were damaged, docks destroyed, boats smashed, etc. Sadly, the facility where the ferry service out to my island is located on the mainland was basically destroyed. That’s going to be inconvenient as hell and costly to rebuild. I keep a car over there on the continental USA, parked in a small parking garage next to the ocean. The garage was smashed (even though made out of concrete!) by huge waves – concrete chunks rained down on the cars and the floor of the garage buckled. The garage completely flooded. Amazingly, my car was the only one that survived unscathed (though it did get flooded) and they were able to clear enough debris to get it out of there. It started right up, I tell ‘ya – nothing stops a Toyota! Though the power stayed on on my island (we have backup generators) it was out for days on the mainland. Yesterday afternoon I took a nap during the second storm and when I woke up I thought I was in the 1980s – no internet, no land line phone, and no cell phone service. All only came back up and running a short while ago.
OMG! Glad you and your family good.
Glad you and your family are fine and your car. That’s amazing it’s undamaged. Keep you in my prayers.
My family’s houses are vacation homes so no no one was in them during the winter. My family now only consists of my father and my sister, both of whom live in other states.
Thanks for your kind thoughts.
You’re welcome. Glad no one was hurt and everyone is well.
Ohh man! Wow..Take care of yourself and come visit me in California! xoxo
Hey Leo, always good to hear from you. I’m going to try to contact you again by email – I may go to California later this winter.
Sounds good and I look forward to it (both the visit and the email)!
Wow! Take care of yourself, Matthew. bob in toronto
Thanks! I’m fine. Only damage I directly sustained was that my boat shed down on the water (which a friend of mine and I built) was smashed and destroyed. π’
A house on a hill overlooking the rocky coast of Maine? You’ve just described my fantasy. I think the risk of such storms would be worth it to live in such a beautiful place.
Well, living here has got its pros and cons so maybe not quite as idyllic as it may seem. But for me the pros outweigh the cons. And it is stunningly beautiful 12 months of the year. Internet, cell phones, and satellite TV make living here possible for me otherwise I don’t think I could stand just sitting around reading and being wistful all the time – let alone deal with the social isolation half the year.
