Located on the California side of Lake Tahoe, and also the site of an unfortunate chapter in American pioneering history. A group of pioneers (The Donner Party) trying to get to the Pacific in the 1840s got stuck and lost in the mountains there one winter and, long story short: cannibalism.  For more info: www.history.com/topics/donner-party
