Koo Koo was a circus and carnival performer who appeared in Tod Browning’s “Freaks” in 1932. An incredible movie using real circus performers, it raised an uproar that nearly sunk MGM. The rights were picked up a few years later by Dwain Esper, director of “Maniac” (1934), who showed it on a roadshow basis. It was banned in England until the 1960’s. It is now recognized as a statement against prejudice for people who are differently-abled than ourselves. It is an absolutely unique film.
BTW, I wasn’t make any judgement/prejudice call against physically or mentally challenged people by saying “WTF????”, but this was certainly a mind boggler as far as what on earth was going on in this picture.
Dan, you must be in New York by now. How’s that going? Shoot me an email!
