An affair to remember: Cary Grant and Randolph Scott

Cary and Randolph Scott 6Cary and Randolph Scott 1Cary and Randolph Scott 2Cary and Randolph Scott 4Cary and Randolph Scott 5In the early 1930s these two film stars were “roommates” for several years. I read that when these pictures of the two of them in their domestic bliss leaked out Cary’s studio told him to cut the crap and get back in the closet. Both denied being gay but a picture says a 1000 words.

  1. What a gorgeous couple. Great photos, Matthew. I am pretty certain the first one is Photoshoped. I seem to remember Cary in that pose with Ingrid Bergman, from “Notorious.” Still makes a great picture. Randolph Scott was at his hunkiest in “Go West, Young Man,” with Mae West.

    • Yeah, I had the sense that first one was photoshopped since the rest of the pix are not as intimate. Love “Notorious”, one of my absolute faves!

  2. An interesting note on Cary Grant. It was he who uttered the first cinematic use of the word “gay” in it’s modern, homosexual sense, in 1938’s “Bringing Up Baby.” He is found wearing Katherine Hepburn’s dressing gown (his clothes had gotten wet, if I remember right), and he says “Because I just went gay all of a sudden.” According to the IMDb, the line was Mr. Grant’s ad-lib, and wasn’t in the script. While “gay” was used as slang in the gay community as early as the 20’s and even before, it wasn’t recognized by the straight community until the late 1960’s.
