Ramon Novarro

Ramon_novarro_2Ramon Navarro was a leading actor in American films in the 1920’s & early 1930’s. Although not the first Latino actor to reach superstar status, Valentino preceded him, what I’ve always admired about him was that not only was he gay but he refused to be closeted about it – quite a feat for the time. 1. Thank you Matt! Ramon’s my guy. Lots of his films are lost, but I really recommend “The Arab” and “The Barbarian.” “Ben Hur” is great too, with topless flower girls and a butt-naked guy strung up in the galley. And color sequences, in 1925. And Ramon is beautiful. Somebody once said that he was a little less masculine than Joan Crawford in this roll, which is very true, but I love him even more for being true to himself.
