That was the first thing I noticed, Matthew, the basket.
Ramon got away with murder in the silents and pre-codes. I just love him. See him in “The Pagan” as he stretches out under a tree in a very short sarong, and the camera lovingly moves from his feet up to his beautiful smile. Male objectification at its best. I have never seen a similar shot involving a man (although of course those involving women are legion).
Every couple of years MGM put out personality posters of it’s biggest stars. I have the 1932 poster for Ramon. I just bought a few meters of silver-gilded frame, and hope to build it and get Mr. Novarro up on the wall soon!
Can’t wait to see him in a movie sometime! Would also love to see that 1932 poster you have – can you take a photograph or find it on the net? I’ll post it!

Unfortunately, it doesn’t show his picnic basket.

Will do, Mattaroo!
Thanks for sending it to me. If you do have a copy without the watermark I’d be glad post it “from the archives/collection of Dan in Guadalajara”.
That basket looks like plenty of meat for my buns!
For sure!
