Aren’t we just all Ivy League here – you at Cornell and me having a masters degree from Univ. of Pennsylvania. Great school and people but I hated, hated, hated Philadelphia. I’ve heard it’s gotten nicer since the 80’s when I was there.
I did a documentary there once with the archeologist Tess Howard Carter. We shot antiquities in the museum. Really beautiful. Tess was a sweetheart, too. I went back to stay for a few days and we made floating islands together. That’s a custard-meringue dessert, for those with erotic mind….
i was at Cornell 1975-1985. i still dream I’m there all the time. Ithaca couldn’t get nicer.
I’m a tad younger than you so my Ivy League days were a little after yours. And have never been to Ithaca, though I hear it’s lovely.
I got my undergraduate degree at McGill, so after 5 years in ultra-awesome Montreal, Philadelphia seemed like a dump. I have dreams that take place in Montreal quite often, sometimes even in French which is weird since English is my “first” language.
Montreal is indeed fabulous. I was there as a kid and young adult, and last year went back by train, up through the Adirondacks. I suppose it isn’t so strange to dream about a place that had a huge effect on you. Ithaca has a nude beach where I once sat naked on a log, talking with the mayor. She later tried to legalize gay marriage in Ithaca, in the days mayors were doing that. A magical place.
“Only Angels Have Wings” (1939). A Howard Hawks film. Hawks was a Cornellian, a few years before I was there…
Thanks, Dan. Now I know.
