I didn’t know that she had tried out for the part of the Wicked Witch. I bet she would’ve made a pretty good one too – she was good at evil parts – but I think Margaret Hamilton totally nailed the role so I’m glad Gale wasn’t cast.

She was happy to bow out. They were going to bill her as a “beautiful” wicked witch. Along the same lines as the witch in Snow White, which had just happened. She thought the idea redundant.
I didn’t know that either. Funny though, I don’t think of Gale as a “beauty”star, more just a good actress especially in evil parts like she did in “The Letter” and other films she did which I might remember but it’s cocktail hour right now.
Perhaps “beautiful” is a tad inaccurate. Glamourous might be more appropriate. Note the sequins on the hat and the heavy makeup
Gloria Swanson would’ve made a good Wicked Witch too. Glad they went as they did (ugly witch style, Margaret Hamilton), though I love the black sequined alternative costume on Gale. Sparkle/glamour is just not appropriate for THE wicked witch.
