Hey Matthew, really enjoy your blog. That’s actually Hattie McDaniel, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Mammy. She was simply amazing and stole every scene she was in.
People always slate McDaniel for accepting servile ‘Mammy’ roles during her career but she had bills to pay and the world was a different place back then. Her performance in GWTW is stunning, especially how sly and manipulative she can be. It’s an interesting battle of wills between her and Scarlet; she’s more of a mother to Scarlet than her actual Mum.
