Hattie McDaniel and Vivien Leigh in “Gone With the Wind”, 1939 Posted on May 29, 2017 by Matthew 4 Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:Like Loading... Related
Hey Matthew, really enjoy your blog. That’s actually Hattie McDaniel, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Mammy. She was simply amazing and stole every scene she was in.
OMG, You are so right. I posted that this morning prior to any caffeine kicking in and apparently I was brain dead. Correction has been made, thanks!
People always slate McDaniel for accepting servile ‘Mammy’ roles during her career but she had bills to pay and the world was a different place back then. Her performance in GWTW is stunning, especially how sly and manipulative she can be. It’s an interesting battle of wills between her and Scarlet; she’s more of a mother to Scarlet than her actual Mum.
“Mammie, Mammie! Tay-ur down the currtuns and run me up a dray-us!” HAHAHAHA (Ruby Wax, ‘Girls On Top’)
