Apparently there are differences between a pirate and a buccaneer. I didn’t read what the differences are but I’m gathering from this illustration of a buccanneer that they are more into bathing and fashion.

dear Matt greetings from Paris !
Nice pic, generally differences are subtle in those questions, but some run for themselves while some are run for a king or Nation. Here are some info: https://www.thoughtco.com/pirates-privateers-buccaneers-and-corsairs-2136214
Corsairs were mandated by a King in order to destroy enemy commerce. Famous french corsairs were Jean Bart (who saved France in 1704) and Surcouf, there are many others of course !
All the best, regards.
Franck
I vaguely remember that there was a difference based on whether they were plundering for themselves or for a nation, thanks for confirming that. In any case, the buccaneer in the illustration looks better dressed than your typical pirate in mismatched, dirty clothes. Supposedly Blackbeard buried a pile of loot in the greater Acadia area (Nova Scotia/Maine) but I haven’t found it yet.
