NEVER FORGET, so that it never happens again anywhere in this world.

  1. Dear Matt, terrifying ! Geat idea for the remembrance, thanks !
Two dates to notice: 27 january 1944: end of Leningrad Siege, 27 january 1945, liberation of Auschwitz camp by soviet troops.

A minor correction: Berlin was liberated by the red army, it is thus soviets that blowed the svastika. There is also the famous photograph of the frontoviki planting the soviet flag on the reichtag.

Once again, thanks and happy new year too !

    cheers.

    Franck.

    • Hey Franck, Thanks for the note. I think the swastika getting blown up was on top of the Nuremberg stadium (where the Nazis held some of their infamous huge rallies like the one in 1933) and was done by the American Army, so not in Berlin or done by the Russians. Funny to think that 75 years ago the US and Russia were allies and both fought against Germany, albeit mostly on separate fronts. Times have changed.

      • Oh yes sorry ! Au temps pour moi ! (a french military expression meaning “at time for me !” equivalent to “sorry sir !”). Of course you are right:

I replied too fast, I throught it was Berlin, forgetting the right location. Important to correct in this respect.

Great idea to remember these events at a time where even in the US we see antisemitic on the rise and even attacks.

I would just add a recent acquisition of a canadian university of a book claimed to have been owned by Hitler and hinting at holocaust in north America:

        https://edition.cnn.com/2019/01/25/americas/holocaust-canada-north-america-blueprint-scli-intl/

        terrifying.

Thanks to correct, best regards !

        Franck

      • Franck, Sorry for my delay in responding to your note. It is very scary to see the rise of hate around the world and always a good idea to remind people what happens when hate starts getting ratcheted up to a national rather than individual or local level. Here in North America I see the rise of hate directed more at race (Blacks, Latinos, and Muslims) than against Jews and Gays. I did read a short article about that book that surfaced in Canada about the Nazis plans for North America if they were to ever have successfully invaded. Although I’m not generally known as an optimist (more jaded realist than anything) – I don’t think this current wave of authoritarianism and hate in the world will grow to World War III proportions but we must remain vigilant and never forget what happened in the 1930s and 1940s. – Matthew
