Good Krampus Night!
Krampus is an ancient legend in the central European mountainous areas – Bavaria, eastern Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, & Slovenia. While St. Nicholas (Santa) visits all the good children on the night of Dec. 24th, Krampus visits all the BAD children on the night of Dec. 5th and beats them with birch sticks, pulls their hair, slaps them, and everything up to and including abduction and homicide. Quaint! Krampus is often depicted as a cross between a devil and a goat with a long, forked tongue and cloven hooves for feet. Though the legend survived over the centuries it fell out of favor in the mid 20th century when the Nazis took the holiday a little too seriously.
