I believe the person on the left is German author Thomas Mann, who was gay. I read he was in love with the man on the right, a close friend, but he was not interested in Thomas and instead later courted Thomas’ sister. Ouch.

Ouch is right… On the other hand, they look like twins.
They do look similar. But I’m pretty sure I remember reading this little story about these two men in the photo at whatever site I saw it at. Interestingly, I’ve seen this phenomena of two gay men who are in a relationship looking very similar or even identical many times. I think that is weird and even a little narcissistic but maybe I have been wrong all these years and I should be looking for someone who looks exactly like me to settle down with.
