Keep in mind that the US population distribution was a lot different 100 years ago. Cities had fewer people and rural populations were larger back then. And the population shift to the south and west had not accelerated yet. Cities like Houston, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Phoenix, etc. were pretty small towns back then compared to the multi-million mega cities they are now.
